As an authorized service center we make every attempt to only use OEM recone kits when available. Our exhaustive research has proven that properly installed OEM components bring your speaker back to factory specifications. Many times we have found that the manufacturers will change the components in their recone kits. They are usually responding to a failure mode that the driver should withstand. Other times component changes are made based upon other performance characteristics such as frequency response, distortion, transient response, safety, special application parameters, sales and marketing requirements, service concerns, and  vendor support.

Many other recone stations fail to use the correct parts. In general, substitute kits do not perform as well as OEM specified kits. Very few of the components are actually improved. Most of them are just lower in cost and do not perform even close to the quality of the right recone parts. The  advantages of these substitute kits are mainly lower cost and a higher profit margin for the repair shop. This allows unauthorized reconers to buy these parts and service {actually disservice} the products.

We have encountered a number of customers who are not using the best model selection for a given application. Many times the transducer can be repaired with a different model number kit within a given type. This results are a driver that may become more useful and/or offer significant performance advantages. Our extensive experience allows us the ability to give customers an ADVANTAGE by modifying current drivers. Usually there is a very small difference in the repair cost. A very specialized service that we offer is surround  replacement {edge material connecting the cone to the frame}. It is very common for the surround on a speaker to rot and fall apart. Most often this occurs with the foam style although textile/cloth surrounds break down as well. Replacement materials available can be installed for a fraction of the cost of a complete recone job. There are limitations as to whether we will be able to perform the repair. Even though a given size woofer from different manufacturers may look the same, they may require different surrounds. We only replace certain surrounds as the availability of proper replacement materials are limited. Most OEM's do not offer surround components separately. Fortunately we have found distributors that stock some of the exact components that the OEM's buy. We recheck these items ourselves as an extra measure of quality control. In certain instances we will use a generic part if acceptable performance can be achieved. This is usually isolated to lower cost home stereo speakers. Replacement of these home stereo surrounds is generally an alternative to purchasing new speakers completely. For customers who have more significant problems on older and/or lower quality systems, many times we recommend  upgrading to a new pair of studio monitors if at all possible.
